Augustus

     Today in class we learned about Octavian and his rule. Here are some facts about his life:

• He is now the unchallenged ruler of Rome
• He was given the honorific “Augustus” which means “Exalted one”
• He was also given the title “imperator” and was also a supreme military commander
• We get the word “emperor” from this
• Rome now became an empire
• 40 years of ruling (27 BC to AD 14)
• This began a stable era of peace and prosperity known as the Pax Romana which means Roman Peace in Latin

• Pax Romana was 207 years long

• He expanded the Roman Empire further into Africa
• He set up civil service to run the government/empire
• He built roads
• Created a sewer system
• Created a police and fire force
