My First Day Learning About Greece
Today in class I started to learn about ancient Greece.
Since I missed some of the notes, it was a little hard to understand some of
what Mr. Schick was talking about. But we talked about some vocab words like
polis, monarchy, aristocracy, oligarchy, tyrant, aristocrats, and symposiums. Then
we talked about politics in ancient Greece. In politics, no were no women, middle
class, slaves, or certain aristocrats allowed in politics. Most of the time before
the democracy, tyrants would seize control of the government. But there were
cases where aristocrats would form alliances with hoplites, who were well-armed
soldiers, to set up an alternative form of government called a tyranny. Some of
more famous rulers include Draco, Solon, Cleisthenes, Isagoras, and Hippias.
Draco ruled in 621 BCE and changed some things in the government. He made it so
all Athenians are made equal under the law, he made it so dead was the
punishment to many crimes, and said debt slavery is ok. Solon ruled in 594 BCE
and made changes to Draco rules. He outlawed debt slaves, allowed the people to
speak in the assembly, and said any citizen can press charges against wrongdoers.
Cleisthenes ruled around 500 BCE and started to give people rights. He allowed
people to submit laws ideas for a debate over them and created the Council of Five
Hundred where people were chosen at random to be a part of this assembly.
Hippias then took over and ruled from 527 BCE to 510 BCE. When his brother was
murdered, he got mad and started to get angry. He was eventually ostracized
from Athenian.
