The War Begins

Today in class we learned about the beginning of the American Revolution. But before I talk about that, I should go start right after the Intolerable Acts. The colonists were angry at the British. They said that this punishment was to much to handle. So, the First Continental Congress met on September 5, 1774 in Philadelphia. Representatives from every colony except Georgia were there. Georgia was not their because they were trying to stop a Native American upraising, so they needed British supplies. They other colonies meet so they could decide what to do against the British. Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, George Washington, John Jay, and others led the congress. They decided to create the Declaration of Rights which said that they were still pledging is loyalty to Britain. They also created the Articles of Association which said they would stop importing goods from Britain. The Congress also say to repeal the Intolerable Acts and if they didn't they would meet again on May 10, 1775. The British responded with sending more soldiers to they colonies. So, the towns got together and created minutemen who were men from the age of 16-60. They stored up their guns and ammo in Concord. Then, on April 18, 1775, 700 British soldiers headed to destroy the weapons in Concord. The colonists had a system where they would put 1 light for land and 2 for sea on the church tower. Then, once Paul Revere, William Dawes, and Samuel Prescott helped spread the word that the British were coming. Once he told them, the minutemen came ready to fight. And then, the a soldier fired a shot that is now known as the shot that was heard around the world.
