The Costitutional Convention
Today in class we started the class off by writing down some
important dates. Some examples of these dates are like when the Revolution
began and when it ended, the Declaration of Independence, when the Articles of Confederation
were written and when they were ratified, the Treaty of Pairs, and the Constitutional
Convention. Then, we talked about the Constitutional Convention in May 1787. The
convention had 55 delegates and George Washington was presiding it. They in
fact kept the convention secret by locking the doors and nailing up the
windows. The purpose of the convention was to design a form of government. In
the convention, they made the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate
had the same number of votes for each state to make the smaller states happy.
The House of Representatives had different number of votes depending on how
many people were in each state; so, this helped the bigger states. They also created
the three-fifths compromise which says slaves count as three-fifths of a
person.
